During the height of the gold rush in the mid-1800's, gold stamp mills were common. They smashed large pieces of rock, releasing the gold from the quartz. "Two Stamp Mill," said to be the only mill of its kind in the US, is located in Virginia City, Nevada. .. DLW - Click image to enlarge.

For many years I didn't photograph waterfalls. I simply didn't like to use tripods, even though the best images of falls I had seen were taken with tripods and very slow shutter speeds in order to capture the water as a smoothly flowing, often ethereal stream. Since moving to SW Oregon, where many falls surround us, I've come to realize the tripod is a great tool, especially when it comes to moving water. The waterfall images above and below were taken from the same vantage point, one taken at 1/4 second and the other at 1/15. I particularly like the frenetic quality of the water at 1/15 second (above). In a way its more painterly than the smoother rendition taken at 1/4 second (below). Click image to enlarge.
During the rainy season at Emigrant Lake near Ashland, many rock formations are underwater. The lake works its magic during this time. When it recedes, new patterns, such as this delicate circle, emerge. This image was originally posted on Winston Unleashed April 14, 2007. Click image to enlarge.

At the time I was working on the photography for a series of chidren's books based on farm life. "Truckscape" was taken along The Old Siskiyou Highway which is the road where I photographed last week's image, "Yellow Leaves in Fog." At the base of this road, precipitation this time of year is usually in the form of rain, but by the time it winds its way upward to Interstate 5, only six miles later, the rain often becomes snow. Last Saturday I went to The Hope Mountain Barter Faire in Takilma, OR, best known for its treehouses. I didn't see treehouses, but did find a peaceful gathering, with great music, food and warm people,
